Parallels between winemaking and preserving cultural heritage
Donnafugata for Entella.
It is a project focused on the cultural exploitation of the territory and its goal is the excavation of Entella, the ancient Anthilia - and then making the community known to aficionados of archaeology through the framework of an Elymian itinerary that would include Erice and Segesta. Donnafugata is moving this program ahead by supporting the excavation by the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa at the behest of the Sopraintendenza Archeologica di Palermo. In 2000, the estate also established the prize named for Giuseppe Nenci, the leading researcher into the Elymian civilization.
The Elymians and Entella.
Little is known about the Elymians. Some researchers assign them an Aegean origin, probably Asia Minor, and date their arrival in Sicily at some point between the 12th and 8th centuries BCE. The Elymians were an agricultural people and not warriors. They were responsible for the introduction of the cultivation of vines in the zone, as indicated by the numerous artifacts found on the Rocca and by the minting of coins of the Roman period with images of grape clusters. The ancient city of Entella took the name Anthilia in the Roman epoch. di Anthilia.
