At Khamma in 1999, Donnafugata brought to light among a tangle of blackberry vines a small but enormous treasure, an old Zibibbo vineyard of 7 hectares (17,3 acres).
At the 2000 vintage, laboratory analyses and tastings showed that the Zibibbo clusters harvested were extremely rich and that finding led the estate to commission a study by Prof. Mario Fregoni, lecturer in viticulture at Catholic University of Piacenza and an authentic expert. PHYLLOXERA DISARMED |
On Pantelleria, as in only a few countries throughout the world (Cyprus, China and Chile) and in some insular contexts (Sardinia and the Canaries), vines have been found that have not been grafted to rootstocks. In sandy terrains, like those of volcanic origin, the virulence of phylloxera was greatly reduced. These plants, also known as self-rooting vines, represent a historic repertoire and a formidable biodiversity heritage. |
